Each belt level has particular information that is covered during the course of the year. For the most part, this curriculum will focus on arithmetic (computation and number sense) and geometry, as well as applying skills and concepts learned to relevant word problems. At each level, we will emphasize that problems need to be broken up into four steps: understanding, strategy, execution, and check. At the lower belt levels, emphasis will be placed primarily on understanding and execution, with greater emphasis placed on strategy and checking solutions at the higher belt levels. At all levels word problems provide a key test of the mathlete's mastery of the material.
At all levels, we will attempt to help the mathletes develop comfort with demonstrating their evolving mathematical skills. This requires repeated exposure to "tests", either as warm-ups at the beginning of each meeting or during the Heatherwood Math Olympics competition.
White, Yellow, Orange, and Green belts are the "Introductory" or lower level belts mostly composed of first through third graders. At these levels we will concentrate on getting the mathletes to improve their understanding of elementary arithmetic, developing their arithmetic skills, introducing them to some quantitative geometrical concepts, building their confidence, and applying arithmetic and geometry in the context of word problems. At this level, problem understanding and execution are the key steps, although at the orange and green belt levels we will also begin to emphasize checking solutions.
Purple through Red belts are "Intermediate" level belts predominantly composed of third through fifth graders. At these levels, we will place less emphasis on skill development and more emphasis on creative problem solving and greater abstraction. Strategy and checking become more important parts of the problem solving venture. Beginning at he Blue Belt level, mathletes will be encouraged to compete in the Math Olympiad competition. A larger fraction of the problems that will be assigned to mathletes at these belt levels will be similar to the Math Olympiad problems.
The initial curriculum will focus on arithmetic skills at all levels as well as well as pre-algebra and algebra as belt levels increase. Later in the year, the higher belts will spend more time on algebra and we geometry will be introduced at all levels.
